Why is Dr. Noguchi Hideyo so famous among Japanese people? Because we see his portrait almost everyday on the 1,000-yen bank note. What did he do as a medical doctor? He studied yellow fever in South America and Africa at the Rockefeller Foundation. Dr. Noguchi died of the disease in 1928 while he was in Ghana at the age of 51. On his gravestone in New York are the words : He lived and died for humanity. The Japanese government has set up the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize with an award of 100-million yen.

＊ yellow fever : 黄熱病。　野口英世は、南米エクアドルで黄熱病とされた病気のワクチンを作る事に成功して多くの病人を救ったが、アフリカのガーナの黄熱病には野口ワクチンは効果がなく、後に南米の黄熱病はアフリカのウイルス性黄熱病とは異なる細菌性の病原体ではなかったかと示唆されている。

＊ the Rockefeller Foundation :ロックフェラー財団。アメリカの実業家ジョン・ロックフェラーにより１９１３年に設立された。野口英世は１９０４年財団の前身である医学研究所に就職後、財団の意向を受けて黄熱病の研究に取り組んだ。

＊ the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize : ５年毎に開かれるアフリカ開発会議で授与される。アフリカに関する医学研究と医療活動に貢献したもの、それぞれ一人に１億円が授与される。第一回授与は２００８年。
