Body Language 英会話「あぜりあ」本八幡・西船橋・津田沼・佐倉
Body Language. It speaks volumes.
We all know that communication can be difficult, let alone in another language. What makes it even more difficult is when you are talking with someone and you can tell by their body language that they are not interested in what you have to say. During those times it would probably be best to change the subject to allow the other person to speak as well. However for some, it is hard to read another’s body language as it not always easy to see or understand. Everyone is different but there are some common things to look for; let’s talk about it!
Body language is the unconscious and conscious transmission and interpretation of feelings, attitudes, and moods. I know you’re dying to in what ways we show these things, don’t worry I will gladly inform you of a few basics!
The most common ways that we show body language is
1. Through our posture( so if you see someone slouching in a chair at work or school then they are most likely not interested in what they should be or doing or listening to.
2. Through our movements( if you see child stomping or moving angrily to do a task their parents asked of them, then they are most likely very unhappy/angry about it. Some people will call that pouting.
3. Through our position and relation to others bodies( we all believe in personal space but if you are standing closer to someone while you talk you may both feel really engaged/interested in the conversation or you both may simply be comfortable with one another.
4. Through facial expressions and eye movement. In America looking someone in the eyes while they speak shows that you are paying attention and you are generally interested in what they have to say. Our facial expressions also say a lot about how we feel. If you are bored or tired, happy or sad, or any other emotions you may have will also appear….that is unless you have a good poker face.
While I think it is important to be able to understand others body language, it should not be your main focus during a conversation. It should only be a part of what you focus on, but eventually it becomes a natural ability if not already. I have a difficult face to read, what about you?
