THE MEMORIAL DAY — HOLIDAY ??? 「あぜりあ」本八幡・西船橋・津田沼・佐倉
TO ALL MY SWEET AND LOVING BLOGGING FANS IN JAPAN !!!
Aloha To You All ! This is a long weekend for us in The USA. I am not sure which of us has more holidays. You there in Japan or us here in America. It just seems like every time I turn around, my calendar has some kind of Holiday written on it. Is it like that for you too? And some of yours at least, must be more exciting than ours? Like say your GOLDEN WEEK?
BLOG : # 62 : THE MEMORIAL DAY — HOLIDAY ???
Hello My Dear Readers.
In case you did not know, because our calendars are not the same, this Monday, the 28th of May, is a Holiday for us here in America. It’s Memorial Day. It is a Holiday where kids get the day off from school and lots of grown-ups get the day off from work. I understand that part. Sort of. I also know what Memorial Day is supposed to be. Remembering and honoring the people who fought in our wars. In Honolulu, at PUNCHBOWL Cemetery where my late husband is buried, along with his first wife, I think it is the young boy scouts that come and put small American Flags on all the graves. It is a beautiful sight. I understand that part of the holiday too.
What I DON’T get is how Memorial Day became another kind of “Holiday” for us. Somehow, and I say this sadly, and with a heavy heart, Memorial Day has become something else. It is almost as if Memorial Day itself has disappeared and has become a “Holiday” that has nothing to do with what the day actually represents.
I am not sure exactly how it happened but Memorial Day has now become: THE UNOFFICAL FIRST DAY OF SUMMER. (The real first day of Summer is on the twenty-first of June). Well, now that THE UNOFFICIAL FIRST DAY OF SUMMER is here, it just means that everyone is being excited, bringing their grills out, already doing Summer things, grilling hot dogs, hamburgers, ribs, chicken, you name it and just having fun. Three weeks early. I am not against having fun. I like that a lot but not when the Holiday is supposed to mean something else entirely. Also, I do not grill. The grilling is not my thing. Not at all. I do not have a grill and have no plans to get one. Whatsmore, I save the Hot Dog and Hamburger thing for The Fourth Of July (our Independence Day). That is when I have my most fun.
So please, bring back Memorial Day to what is it supposed to be so that those who should be honored and remembered can be so. Remembered in our minds and hearts. Now and Always.
Aloha,
